Intermittent Fasting, OMAD, Ketosis, Autophagy for Sjogren’s Syndrome: MD Explains Pro/Cons

For our clients, we help design custom diet plans based on several key criteria: 1) Microbiome Specificity, 2) Phytonutrients, 3) Macronutrients, and 4) Food Sensitivity. These four criteria help determine whether any type of diet will work for managing Sjogren’s Syndrome symptoms during a flare, as well as healing inflammation over time to reach remission.
fasting for shogran syndrome does it help and is it sustainable that’s the question we’ll explore today and we’ll be delving into different fasting methods such as water fast intermittent fasting one meal a day and the pros and cons of [Music] ketosis hi I’m Dr Chan OAS a surgeon who specializes in reversing complex inflammation naturally using the manga immunity method we’ve refined our methodology over the past 12 years and help thousands of patients recover and we look at conditions such as strobin syndrome and solve the root cause as you know by now from the hundreds of research papers on the topic the gut microbiome plays a significant role in modulating the immune response in shogan syndrome and if you want to find out how we fix these issues schedule a discovery call with me and I’ll provide you with some helpful tips to get started there are several studies that describe fasting in the setting of shogran syndrome here’s a 2022 study on the effects of intermittent fasting on shogen syndrome I’ll break this study down on fasting but I’ll also share with you some personal insights into how fasting plays out in the long term for people with shogan syndrome to start it’s essential to understand that around 80% of your immune system resides in the gut this region is called the mucosa Associated lymphatic tissue or Mt for short the Mt contains trillions of immune cells that respond to what’s inside your intestine so what’s inside mostly food but also microbes including bacteria fungi and viruses these microbes break down food and produce SE secondary and tertiary metabolites which can trigger your immune response and that’s why maintaining a balanced microbiome and eating the right foods are crucial for managing shogen syndrome check out my other video titled the ideal diet for shogren syndrome which I’ve linked to in the description below in that video I go into the detail about the four criteria I use to determine whether a diet is effective or not and spoil alert I’m a strong proponent of the phytonutrient diet or phyto Diet we frequently use it in our clinics and have seen amazing results when combined with Precision microbiome Rec calibration many of our patients experience rapid Improvement in their symptoms often within just a few weeks so I encourage you to watch that video and learn more about how phytonutrients play a role in managing shogren syndrome now the four criteria I use to evaluate whether any dietary approach Works including fasting are as follows phytonutrient density and diversity macronutrient requirements microbiome specificity and food sensitivity if you’re curious about why these factors are important check out the ideal diet for shogren syndrome video Linked In the description like I said earlier but for now I’ll also give you a quick recap here so you don’t need to jump between videos phytonutrient density and diversity phytonutrients are powerful micronutrients that help reduce inflammation in the body there are plenty of studies that highlight their role in managing shogran syndrome here’s a 2021 study that reviews the potential benefits of using natural bioactive compounds such as polyphenols to alleviate dry eye and dry mouth symptoms in shogren syndrome another 2021 study looks at the therapeutic effects of green tea polyphenol on salivary gland dysfunction in strog disease and here’s one from 2020 discussing the therapeutic effects of catapal a compound found in the herb r radics on primary shogan syndrome phytonutrients are molecular compounds found primarily in plants and fungi and they offer significant health benefits commonly known terms like superfoods micronutrients and antioxidants are all types of phytonutrients research consistently shows that increasing your intake of phytonutrient can alleviate the symptoms of shogren syndrome these compounds are divided into several key categories tpes phenols chlorop thiocyanates phyto enzymes phyto oils prebiotics and alkaloids while there are other smaller groups such as betal lines from beets and herisson from mushrooms focusing on these eight main categories will cover most of your phytonutrient needs now lack of these essential nutrients can weaken the mind gut immune connection making it harder to manage inflammatory conditions such as shogen syndrome the goal is to maximize and optimize your intake of phytonutrients from everyday foods and by maximize and optimize I mean increasing both the variety and the density of phytonutrients in your diet a low intake of phytonutrients can make it more challenging to fight inflammation during fasting however you typically get very few if any of these critical nutrients you might feel temporarily better because your digestive system is less active with no food to process but the lack of phytonutrients means immune regulation doesn’t happen and symptoms can return as soon as you stop fasting a helpful tip if you’re considering a water fast for several days or even intermittent fasting with a six or 8 Hour window is to include herbal tees herbal tees are rich in phytonutrients like polyphenols and Turpin which help reduce inflammation without adding calories and shogren disease next what are the macronutrient requirements for shogren disease macro is short for macronutrients and these are carbs fats and proteins all of which are essential for the body to function properly I’ve got a helpful tool on my website called the macro calculator which helps you determine your body’s maintenance requirements based on factors like height weight age gender and activity level it’s important to understand that these macronutrient estimates are based on ideal physiological function however when fasting you’re not getting enough of these nutrients in the long term or at best you’ll receive them in reduced amounts let’s break down the different types of fasting water fasts which are 24 48 or 72 hours or even up to 5 to 14 days you can have to total caloric restriction which is consuming fewer than 800 to 1,000 calories per day intermittent fasting which means eating in a 6h hour 8 hour 10h hour or 12h hour window one meal a day which is consuming all of your calories in one meal whichever fasting method you choose the underlying benefit for shrin comes from ketosis in ketosis your body switches from using carbohydrates for energy to relying on stored fats and muscle supporters of fasting also highlight a process called autophagy where the body body cleans up old or damaged cells which has an anti-inflammatory effect but here’s the issue while fasting May temporarily relieve some strogen symptoms they often return so what happens the second time or the third time or over the long term if you continue fasting when symptoms return eating can be even more challenging you may feel bloated fatigued or low energy after meals making it difficult to eat properly this can create a vicious cycle that’s hard to break especially if you’re underweight a body mass index be a of 18 or lower can be particularly concerning for those with trogan syndrome and you can easily calculate your BMI using the BMI calculator on a Clinic’s website if your BMI is below 18 that’s a serious issue and I’ve treated patients with BMI is low as 13 which is extremely severe when someone with shogan Syndrome has a low BMI it means their body is in a catabolic State breaking down muscle and protein instead of building it up which hinders healing many of these patients struggle to tolerate food and require careful coaching to reintroduce it into their diets the reason I emphasize this is the solution to a dysfunctional gut microbiome should never involve avoiding Foods or stopping eating altogether even if the fasting makes you feel better temporarily and I’ve been there myself so I understand the appeal of fasting but instead of avoiding food the key is to reduce inflammation first then return to normal eating habits and when I made this change and when my patients did the results were far more sustainable unfortunately many people with shogren syndrome give up on trying to find what the right diet is and end up avoiding Foods altogether here’s a recent study that shows how intermittent fasting for extended periods can actually increase the risk of cardiac death furthermore if you have caloric restriction for long periods of time and we’re talking over several days weeks and months of intermittent fasting various issues can arise you can also have weight loss and muscle wasting thyroid dysfunction cortisol and sympathetic endocrine dysfunction sleep disturbances protein calorie malnutrition which impedes wound healing and inflammation control nausea reflux a feeling of fullness and decreased appetite and severe intermittent fatigue sometimes it’s impossible to separate these symptoms out from the actual shogren disease the reason I emphasize this is that the solution to a dysfunctional gut microbiome should never be to stop eating or avoiding food altogether instead the focus should be on reducing inflammation first then transitioning back to a normal balanced diet unfortunately many people struggling with shogren disease have given up on finding the right diet and may resort to avoiding food which only worsens the situation if you’re trying to determine the ideal macronutrient balance for managing shogan syndrome the key is to focus on fats carbs and proteins to reduce inflamation I recommend that about 50% of your daily calories come from fats with carbohydrates and proteins each making up 25% the reason for a smaller portion of carbohydrates especially in the beginning is because harmful gut bacteria and candida in particular thrive on sugar they love carbs if your microbiome is already imbalanced feeding it sugar will only make the shogren worse you essentially have bad bacteria and funguses in the intestine being fed sugars carbs and fiber which leads to inflammation that travels to the rest of your body creating dry eye and salivary gland dysfunction as well as other symptoms of Ana positive autoimmune disease simple sugars like glucose and fructose can stimulate the growth of both harmful bacteria and fungi similarly simple starches such as those found in processed flour can lead to bacterial and fungal overgrowth this observation comes from my extensive experience working with thousands of patients rather than from any specific scientific studies if your goal is to lose weight you might need to reduce your carbs and fats even further while increasing protein intake and lowering overall caloric consumption on the other hand if you’re trying to gain weight you’ll want to increase your total caloric intake and adjust your carb and fat ratios for a more balanced approach tracking your macronutrients can be a powerful tool to help you achieve your health goals while it requires some effort the benefits are well worth it this approach can significantly improve dietary balance and long-term health outcomes in trogen disease so just a recap the criteria I use to judge whether a diet will work for reversing the inflammation long-term in patients with shogren syndrome are the following phytonutrient focused meeting nutritional requirements microbiome specificity and avoiding food sensitivity as I mentioned earlier feel free to check out some of my other videos or refer to the description below for additional resources you’ll find links to a body mask calculator a guide to the different types of phytonutrients needed to manage shogen syndrome a macronutrient calculator Ator to determine daily fats carbs and protein needs and a fiber and starch guide to help you avoid carbohydrates that can worsen gut microbiome dysfunction as I said before I help my clients structure their diets based on these principles and they often see significant improvements in their symptoms within a short period of time many are able to reduce or even completely stop their medications leading healthy or more fulfilling lives as a result I am a strong advocate of the phytonutrient diet which I use regularly in my patients and it’s an effective approach for recalibrating gut microbiome dysfunction and addressing issues related to phytonutrient deficiency in troin disease this diet also helps avoid food sensitivities while meeting long-term nutritional needs for those who are undereating this typically means increasing food intake especially the types of foods that will help you gain healthy weight while also healing inflammation the right way by following this approach you can avoid many of the negative consequences of long-term undereating reversing the effects of fasting can be hard work but with the right plan it’s entirely possible okay one last thing I would like to hear your thoughts down below comment on the types of food that exacerbate your inflammation especially if you have shogan disease and what have you done to avoid them and finally if you like this video please like And subscribe and be sure to share this video with someone you think it will help this is Dr chanun D with the Mind get immunity clinic and I’ll see you next time [Music]
