**Carnivore Diet** for Ulcerative Colitis: Top Mistakes, Pros and Cons, How to Benefit (Dasari MD)

For our clients, we help design custom diet plans based on several key criteria: Microbiome Specificity, Phytonutrients, Macronutrients, and Food Sensitivity. These four criteria help determine whether any type of diet will work for managing Ulcerative Colitis symptoms during a flare, as well as healing inflammation over time, to reach remission. In this video, we review many popular diets out there, and compare them to the Mind-Gut-Immunity method.
carnivore diet for ulcerative colitis does it actually work and what’s the best way to maximize your results in this video we’ll be breaking down everything you need to know about the carnivore diet for ulcerative colitis and how it measures up against other diet options we’ll also go through some common pitfalls and how to monitor your progress along the [Music] way hi I’m Dr trod doser a surgeon dedicated to reducing inflammation caused by gut microbiome imbalances I myself struggled with digestive dysfunction and autoimmune inflammation in my early 20s and successfully put together a methodology that worked not only in me but also my patients my method is called a mind gut immunity approach and has resulted in thousands of successes over the years if you or someone you know struggles with ulcer colitis and wants to rid themselves of inflammation for good check out our website mgic clinic.com and schedule a discovery call with me I’ll walk you through some practical steps for Ulster of colitis recovery and how to achieve lasting results in just 6 weeks let’s Jump Right In here’s a 2024 case series from Harvard that highlights the effectiveness of ketogenic and carnivore diets in managing ulcerative colitis however this other 2022 study explores the potential link between carnivore diets and the development of ulcer to colitis and IBD so with these conflicting studies how do you know what truly works for ulcerative colitis as I mentioned in another video called ideal Di diet for ulcer of colitis I’m a huge advocate for customized phytonutrient based diet plans for each person and I use four criteria for figuring out whether a diet will work for ulcer to colitis or not and to recap the four criteria are phytonutrients macronutrient requirements microbiome specificity and food sensitivity if you want a deep dive into each one of these then check out that other video called ideal diet for ulcer of colitis but I’ll also give you a quick recap here so now let’s talk about the carnivore diet and and how it compares to other diets like the phyto diet which I recommend for ulst of colitis the harmful bacteria and fungus in your gut thrive on carbohydrates like sugar starches and fiber which leads to bloating gas and inflammation the reason the carnivore diet sometimes works for uler of colitis is only because it eliminates the carbs from this equation cutting down the source of the inflammation the carnivore diet for ulcer of colitis is entirely centered around animal-based Foods cutting out fiber and carbohydrates while incorporating some electrolytes for balance so instead of feeding harmful bacteria and fungus the carnivore diet effectively sidesteps this issue by offering calories through proteins and fats and this is why it’s often used as a temporary measure during flare-ups for individuals who don’t respond well to other dietary strategies but here’s the catch remember those four criteria I mentioned earlier let’s see how this diet holds up in the long run while no carbs mean you’re not feeding the harmful bacteria it doesn’t necessarily fix the balance of your gut microbiome and I’ll explain that part short shortly let’s dive into the first criteria which is phytonutrients phytonutrients are micronutrients derived from plant superfoods they’re packed with antioxidants anti-inflammatory compounds that can help people with ulcerative colitis by reducing inflammation in the gut here’s a 2024 study that looks at polyphenol cortin and its importance in ulcerative colitis here’s another one that discusses the role of Prebiotic fiber in resistant starch phytonutrients fall into several important categories like polyphenols tpin dioc Ates fiber resistant starches Omega fats and alkaloids these micronutrients are essential for reducing inflammation throughout the body starting with the gut so when you follow a strict carnivore diet for ulcerative colitis you’re obviously missing out on these key nutrients however if you’re set on trying the carnivore diet one way to sneak in the phytonutrients without the carbs fiber or sugar herbal tees are a great way to get phytonutrients while sticking to the carnivore plan there are also other diets that are related to the carnivore diet that do include phytonutrients like the paleo diet originally paleo allowed for certain vegetables although nowadays it’s often seen as similar to the carnivore diet you can have keto low carb Atkins diets which limit carbs but still include some phytonutrients so keep in mind that a strict carnivore diet doesn’t allow for phytonutrients meaning you’ll miss out on their anti-inflammatory benefits for UL of kitis now let’s talk about macronutrient requirements the carnivore diet for ulcer colitis actually does a pretty good job when it comes to fulfilling macronutrient needs needs macronutrients include carbohydrates fats and proteins and by entering your height weight and activity level into the calculator available on my website you can estimate your macronutrient requirements and if you’re following the carnivore diet you’ll just need to make some certain adjustments like increasing your fat and protein while reducing your carb intake in general a diet that gets half of its calories from fat is normally a good thing although I don’t particularly like the saturated fats and meats which are associated with certain inflammatory processes I also don’t like the animal-based cholesterol meets which can allow for increases in arachadonic acid in the body I describe both of these inflammatory Pathways at ulcer colitis in my other videos on my channel so if you need a refresher feel free to take a look at these other videos now when I design an ulcer of colitis diet for my clients they’re generally lower in carb anyways so for obvious reasons and most of the fats come from plant-based Omega sources so you don’t have these problems to begin with still from a strictly macronutrient standpoint the carnivore diet for uler this can work really well next let’s look at microbiome specificity let’s go back to this equation you have bad bacteria and fungus that feed on carbs that leads to inflammation the carnivore diet removes the carbs but does it selectively modulate and promote good bacteria the answer is a clear no I know this might sound controversial because there are plenty of people on YouTube who argue that the gut microbiome diversity is actually good in people following the carnivore diet and there’s even entire Reddit threads debating this but but let me give you a practical perspective I’ve reviewed hundreds if not thousands of stool studies over my career and I’ve never seen a healthy functional microbiome and someone following the carnivore diet with ulcerative colitis the very nature of ulcerative colitis involves inflammation caused by a dysfunctional gut microbiome so when we enroll patients at the start of our program we use patented probiotics from Japan to recalibrate the gut microbiome and flush out the harmful bacteria so how do we carefully promote the good bacteria it’s not by avoiding carbs it’s by selecting the right ratios and quantities of phytonutrients and this is where the Mind gut immunity method excels we designed the diets to encourage the growth of specific strains of beneficial bacteria which form a protective bofilm and push out the harmful bacteria and fungus over the course of several weeks the body produces fewer pro-inflammatory markers like tnf Alpha and Inter Lucan 6 thanks to these beneficial bacterias this also means you don’t need the medications the biggest issue with the carnivore diet for ulcer of colitis is that it doesn’t address the root cause problem sure you’re not feeding the bad bacteria by avoiding carbs but the minute you reintroduce carbs fiber and sugars the symptoms flare up again historically this pattern I’ve seen repeat itself people fail the carnivore diet for ulcer of colitis because it’s just not sustainable long term and when they return to eating carbs their symptoms come back and that’s because the core issue the gut microbiome dysfunction was never resolved olved the phyto diet on the other hand actually tackles the root cause which is microbiome dysfunction associated with ulcerative colitis that means longterm you can enjoy more dietary flexibility even incorporating cheap meals without consequences and I typically teach clients how to cheat during the second or third month of the program because by that time we’ve mostly resolved the gut issues in a lasting way I’m not a fan of temporary fixes so and while the carnivore diet can help during flare-ups it’s not a sustainable long-term strategy compared to the customized phyto diets we create for our clients over the years I’ve spoken to many people during Discovery calls who’ve tried and ultimately failed the carnivore diet for ulcerative colitis many of them report getting temporary relief only for their symptoms to return once they reintroduce carbs it’s the story I often hear my hope is that this honest review of the carnivore diet for ulcer of colitis helps you decide if it’s right for you while it can help in the short term the real solution lies in addressing the gut microbiome if you want lasting relief from medications and symptoms all right let’s move to the final criteria food sensitivities food sensitivities are a key topic when it comes to ulcer of colitis in my other video I covered the four main types of food sensitivity tests available the skin prick test the IG blood test the igg4 blood test and the newer mediator release blood test if you need a refresher on these tests be sure to check out my video that dives into food sensitivity testing for ulcerative colitis now specifically regarding the carnivore diet for ulcerative colitis we need to talk about about complex proteins and this is also something I’ve discussed in previous videos you basically ingest large amounts of protein which are broken down in the stomach and upper intestines by proteases these proteases break down the protein into individual amino acids which are then absorbed into the bloodstream but sometimes these proteins do not completely break down and form small peptide chains which can cause really bad inflammation we see this in various types of complex proteins especially ones that are animal arrived this means that the likelihood of being sensitive to one or several types of meat or even eggs is quite High that’s why adopting a carnivore strategy for ulcerative colitis is risky your food options become very limited and you may develop sensitivities all right that’s my talk in the comments below tell me your experience with ulcerative colitis with carnivore type diets and what’s worked for you and what didn’t I’m curious to hear about your experiences as you know I’ve had great success using the Mind gut immunity meth me in my clients and I’m a strong supporter of customized phyto diets for ulcerative colitis and focused gut microbiome recalibration for our clients to achieve lasting success without medication so if you like this video don’t forget to like And subscribe for more content such as this as always this is Dr Chan osre with the Mind G immunity clinic and I’ll see you next time
